Chess in Dubai
Most of Dubai’s chess happens in academies and at meetups. Academies teach children and adults in office towers and malls from Jumeirah Lakes Towers and The Greens to Business Bay and Al Quoz. Social groups meet in a café downtown on Wednesday evenings and in DIFC and The Greens on Sunday afternoons. The Dubai Chess & Culture Club in Al Mamzar and its Sharjah counterpart host the long-running opens, and several small clubs appear mainly as names on the tournament server.

Chess960 around Dubai
Tournament titles for the Emirates from 2025 to 2027 on chess-results.com and the FIDE list of rated events were searched for 960, Fischer random and Freestyle, in English and Arabic. Two events in the area came up, both run by the organiser Kajoooyax at Reef Mall in Deira in March and April 2025; no later edition appears in the 2026 entries.
Chess960 starts from one of 960 shuffled back-rank set-ups, so prepared openings stop mattering and the game is decided at the board from move one. When no event is on the calendar, it can be played online at ch960.com.
Chess960 events found around Dubai:
- Kajoooyax Chess 960 Tournament, Reef Mall, Deira — 30 March 2025, 19:30
- 2nd Kajoooyax Chess 960 Tournament, Reef Mall, Deira — 20 April 2025
How the entries are kept
Each entry is built from pages a reader can open: an academy’s own site, a Meetup event, the UAE Chess Federation’s club register, a press report or a row on chess-results.com. Few small clubs print an address, a fee or a weekly hour, so many entries state only what is known and mark the rest as unknown.
Lists open with the entry whose most recent dated trace of chess is newest; the order is not a judgement of quality. Where no page answers a question, the entry says “not stated by sources” rather than guessing. The page on how the index is checked explains the status lines, the source marks and the leads that were left out.
Do you run chess sessions in Dubai?
Many academies and meetups announce their sessions on Instagram or in WhatsApp groups, which this index does not read, so a regular game can be missed. A link to a Meetup event, a tournament page or a public post that shows the place and the day is enough to add it.
